Ways to take care of your eyes in the digital age

Amidst the ongoing changes in our lifestyle, a need has been developed to cater to issues that our hectic, digital savy days demands. Working for hours through a computer and seeking entertainment binge watching TV shows, puts strain in our eyes and at the end of the day, our eyes feel more exhausted than our body or mind. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to take care of our eyes.

Avoiding to use our computer or phone, is a ludicrous idea. We cannot refrain from denying the importance of digital devices for our work or leisure. But, we sure can work smartly to counter its side effects.

Adjust the brightness, contrast, text size and colour temperature of your computer in a way that causes the minimum amount of glare to reach your eyes. But that does not mean the screen should be dull, so you cannot see anything, and in turn have to squint your eyes, which will cause more eye strain. Change your text and contrast settings to a black text in a white background and reduce the colour temperature. Do the same for your phone, and initiate the reading mode, that lightens screen considerably.


    3. Manage screen time, smartly

Don’t work continuously, take frequent breaks.  A 10 minute break,  after every one hour is most suitable. Stand up, stretch your arms and legs, talk to your colleagues and relax.  Take a break from screen time during lunch and do something else rather than staying glued to complete that project. Follow the 20-20-20 rule, every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.

When you use a computer, your ambient lighting should be about half as bright as that typically found in most offices. Eliminate exterior light by closing drapes and blinds. Reduce interior lighting by using fewer light bulbs  or use lower intensity bulbs and tubes.


Blink and exercise

Blinking is very important when working at a computer; blinking moistens your eyes to prevent dryness and irritation. You can also practice palming. Cover your eyes with the palm of your hand with the fingers on the forehead and the base of the palm resting on the cheekbone.  Do not put too much pressure on the eyes, ensure that your eyes can blink freely.  Do this exercise over a period of 2 minutes.



Position your computer screen so it's 20 to 24 inches from your eyes. The center of your screen should be about 10 to 15 degrees below your eyes for comfortable positioning of your head and neck.
